European Protected Species Development Licence for Great Crested Newt are required for any activity which is likely to result in the disturbance/injury of GCN and their resting places. One of our most recent projects involved the installation of 0.5km of amphibian exclusion fencing, complete with pitfall traps and refugia around the inside of the fence.
A qualified ecologist then visited the site in order to check and empty the traps for a specific time period, which in this case, was 30 days. Any captured animals were removed from the traps and translocated to a purpose-built hibernaculum. All development licences include the provision of compensatory measures in the form of high quality terrestrial or aquatic habitat. We have previously held GCN protected species licence in England and Wales.
